Translated Poisson approximation for Markov chains

چکیده

The paper is concerned with approximating the distribution of a sum W of integer valued random variables Yi, 1 ≤ i ≤ n, whose distributions depend on the state of an underlying Markov chain X. The approximation is in terms of a translated Poisson distribution, with mean and variance chosen to be close to those of W , and the error is measured with respect to the total variation norm. Error bounds comparable to those found for normal approximation with respect to the weaker Kolmogorov distance are established, provided that the distribution of the sum of the Yi’s between the successive visits of X to a reference state is aperiodic. Without this assumption, approximation in total variation cannot be expected to be good.

A Poisson limit theorem for reliability models based on Markov chains

In this article, we deal with a class of discrete-time reliability models. The failures are assumed to be generated by an underlying time inhomogeneous Markov chain. The multivariate point process of failures is proved to converge to a Poissontype process when the failures are rare. As a result, we obtain a Compound Poisson approximation of the cumulative number of failures. A rate of convergen...

Local Alignment of Markov Chains

We consider local alignments without gaps of two independent Markov chains from a finite alphabet, and we derive sufficient conditions for the number of essentially different local alignments with a score exceeding a high threshold to be asymptotically Poisson distributed. From the Poisson approximation a Gumbel approximation of the maximal local alignment score is obtained. The results extend ...

The Poisson Equation for Countable Markov Chains: Probabilistic Methods and Interpretations

This paper considers the Poisson equation associated with timehomogeneous Markov chains on a countable state space. The discussion emphasizes probabilistic arguments and focuses on three separate issues, namely (i) the existence and uniqueness of solutions to the Poisson equation, (ii) growth estimates and bounds on these solutions and (iii) their parametric dependence. Answers to these questio...

Estimation of the Entropy Rate of ErgodicMarkov Chains

In this paper an approximation for entropy rate of an ergodic Markov chain via sample path simulation is calculated. Although there is an explicit form of the entropy rate here, the exact computational method is laborious to apply. It is demonstrated that the estimated entropy rate of Markov chain via sample path not only converges to the correct entropy rate but also does it exponential...
